The Magic of the Hemp Seed

Updated: Jan 22, 2019

Eating hemp can greatly benefit your health!

Learn more about why hemp is incredibly good for you, and why everyone should know about that! We’re excited that this week Laura Noble from Cousin Mary Jane is sharing her knowledge about the many nutritional benefits of hemp seeds with us.

It’s real! The food you eat has a direct relationship to your health.

A passion for good nutrition drew me, Laura Noble, to hemp seeds back in 2010. At that time, it was nearly impossible to purchase them unless I imported from Canada. My mission began. I was captured by the spirit of the cannabis plant and was drawn to developing foods for people to enjoy that used hemp seeds as the main ingredient in a delicious way.

Let’s take a look at how hemp supports a healthy body!

Hemp protein

Move over chia, step aside flax, it’s time for hemp seeds to take center stage! Hemp is your one stop crop for getting tough and buff! Hemp seeds provide maximum nutrition, minimum consumption. This plant-based protein food has more digestible protein than meat, eggs, cheese, fish, cow’s milk or any other high protein foods.

Wondering what makes this plant protein so special? The tiny hemp seed is chocked full of 20 amino acids, including the 9-essential amino acids needed to provide you with all the building blocks for maintaining good health. It’s complete, it’s not an isolate and nothing is fortified.

Healthy fats

Hemp is an excellent source of essential fatty acids, aka - omegas. Those are the good fats. Many think eating fats make you fat; this is not so. By not eating proper fats, your body can actually hold extra weight and inflammation can occur. With time, inflammation can bring on disease and can be the culprit of aches and pains.

Omegas also feed your brain. Yes, your brain needs good nutrition to function properly. When you don't give it what it needs, things can get wacky. Examples of possible problems include behavioral problems, depression, even seizures. What’s cool is hemp seeds provide a perfectly balanced omega profile, giving your body the proper fats it needs for healthy body function!

Vitamin and mineral profile

The little seed doesn’t stop there. The vitamin and mineral profile is second to none! Iron, potassium, foliates, and the list goes on, including an excellent supply of magnesium.

Magnesium is an important mineral our body requires for over 300 functions. It’s vital for reactions that include relaxation of muscles; stimulation of heart beats and blood vessels, controlling cholesterol, and providing energy. Lack of sufficient magnesium can be an underlying factor responsible for many chronic diseases; hypertension, chronic pain, heart disease, osteoporosis, diabetes, and even depression. Many studies have shown most Americans don’t get sufficient magnesium in their diet.

Hemp and your health

The complex carbohydrate in the whole seed can help regulate your blood sugar and the soluble fiber will keep you going. Hemp seeds are magic!

Many who eat hemp seeds regularly have found them to be beneficial in improving cardiovascular circulation and function; increasing energy levels; lowering cholesterol and blood pressure; reductions in symptoms of arthritis; relief in constipation and IBS; and improvement in hair, skin and nails*.

Hemp seeds are easy to add to your daily diet. Put them on salads, vegetables, yogurt, oatmeal, or in baked goods. They’re a great addition to smoothies. Snack on them right out of the bag for an awesome treat.

What this all amounts to is: hemp seeds are pretty much one of the best things you can eat!

Providing nutritious food options

The economic impact of hemp reaches beyond farming and manufacturing. Poor nutrition is costing us billions in Medicare and Medicaid tax dollars. Managing chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes, immune deficiencies, high blood pressure, and arthritis are skyrocketing health care costs.

It’s real! The food you eat has a direct relationship to your health. Our foods today have been modified, fortified and compromised. We’re a Nation of people who are getting fatter, sicker, and grumpier. It doesn’t take scientific studies to support this, just look around you. One of the most fundamental things you can do for healthful body function is proper nutrition!

* Please note: I am no doctor, nor am I trying to treat, diagnose or suggest you stop taking any medications. The FDA has not evaluated these statement claims.
